January 2004

  • Theophany Eve Holy Supper
For the third consecutive year, the faithful of Holy Trinity gathered at 5:00 PM on January 5 for a covered dish Holy Supper. Christmas Eve and Theophany Eve are days of fasting, and it is traditional in many areas of Eastern Europe to hold a meatless and dairyless Holy Supper on these days. Approximately 30 people attended the dinner. At the end of dinner, traditional Carols (kol'ady) were sung by some in attendance. Following the Holy Supper, Vigil (a combination of Great Compline/after-dinner prayer and Matins/morning prayer) was served in the church.

  • McMichael's Creek Blessing
To remember Christ's baptism and to ask God's blessing on the Stroudsburg/Pocono area, faithful from Holy Trinity and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church gathered to bless McMichael's Creek in Stroudsburg on January 6. A procession was formed at Holy Cross and made its way down Stokes Avenue, took a left down Colbert Street, made a right onto Broad Street, crossed over Route 80 and assembled at the small overlook by McMichael's Creek. A brief service followed, at which a Cross (securely tied with a ribbon to the railing) was reverently tossed by Father Theodore Petrides of Holy Cross into the water. The Pocono Record provided local media coverage.
