Theophany 2006

Fifth Annual Theophany Eve Holy Supper

Since 2001, the parish family of Holy Trinity Church has gathered on January 5, the eve of Theophany/Epiphany, to have the Holy Supper, a meal of fasting foods held on the eves of Christmas and Theophany; it is traditional in many parts of Eastern Europe, particulary Carpatho-Rus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Belarus, and Poland.

  • Photo 1: Traditional items for the Holy Supper are set in the center of the hall.
These items are the icon of the Baptism with a "ruchnyk" (an embroidered towel); a table bound with a rope (symbol of the family bond), covered with a white tablecloth (a reminder of the swaddling clothes that wrapped the infant Jesus) and straw (also symbolic of the manger in Bethlehem); candles (since Christ is the Light of the World); a loaf of bread (since Christ if the Bread of Life); wine (for the toast); garlic and honey (symbols of the good and bad, the sweetness and bitterness of life); and an empty chair (to remember the departed, and to welcome strangers).

  • Photo 2: Reader David Mastroberte offers words of welcome and a meditation on the importance and holiness of sharing meals.

  • Photo 3: He also explained the traditional elements of the Holy Supper.

  • Photo 4: After the words of welcome, the candles were lit, the Troparion was sung, and Father Nicholas blessed the meal. Then bread was broken, a toast was given, and garlic and honey were given to each participant.

  • Photo 5: A view of some of the people in attendance.

  • Photo 6: The tables in the hall were arranged together, underscoring the "family meal" aspect of the Holy Supper.

  • Photo 7: Another view of those participating in the meal.

  • Photo 8: Some of the foods that were served.

  • Photo 9: Some children were happier than others.

  • Photo 10: After the Holy Supper, kolyadi (traditional carols) were sung in English and Slavonic.

Everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time! See you next year!
